Kermit's Garden of Verses

Kermit’s Garden of Verses
Title: Kermit’s Garden of Verses
Genre: Poetry
Author: Jack Prelutsky
Illustrator: Bruce McNally
Awards: none
Age group: 9-11 year olds

This book is really cute and if you know most of the basics of the Muppet franchise, it’s a great treat to read. I was very delighted by it indeed. It is also a very mini sized book which makes it even cuter and more like it would be like his diary.

Summary:
This book is written from sort of Kermit’s point of view, it goes through some of his experiences and talks about the characters he knows in poetry form. If you know most of the basics of the Muppets it’s super funny. The book describes a few characters in poems and sometimes has memos from Kermit which is really cute. Here is one poem I liked “Our show should be terrific, we practice all week long, but when the curtain rises, almost everything goes wrong, sometimes the show is awful, sometimes it’s even worse; it hardly even seems to go the way that we rehearse.” Isn’t that so funny. An example of a memo he does is “To Miss Piggy: I have no use for silks and lace so please don’t hog my closet space”. Also this book doesn’t really go in any type of story order so there is no distinct ending.

I think I would use this book in my classroom, because it is really cute and might have a good connection with the kids because of the Muppets theme. It also will get them excited about poetry and might show them how poetry looks. This would make for a great read aloud or for the kids to read individually.

I believe the grade level for this book for the student to be able to read on their own would be 2nd -3rd grade. I believe this because some of these poems are longer and have some big vocabulary words and concepts that a younger level might not get. But I do believe this can be a good read aloud for younger children also.

An activity I think that could go with this book is, after a read aloud of a few key poems in the book by the teacher, the students will then have to write a short poem about their favorite character of their choice on their own. Then they will draw a small picture above that and then will share it with the class. This is a great fun writing exercise.

HAVE FUN READING!💙-Lacy
